Hakkinen ready for Japan showdown

As we head into the penultimate round of the 2000 World Championship, that takes place at the Suzuka circuit in Japan this weekend, the McLaren team have vowed to continue fighting for victory in both the Constructors' and Drivers' World Championships. The circuit has been kind to them in the past two years, with number one driver, Mika Hakkinen securing victory on both occasions. For drivers and engineers, the main chassis balance issue is likely to be understeer. It is especially important to neutralise this characteristic on the exit from the Spoon Curve, since it is critical to carry as much speed as possible onto the following straight and up to 130R to exploit any overtaking opportunities. This weekend's race will be an exciting one from the fans perspective, as Mika Hakkinen goes head to head with Ferrari ace Michael Schumacher. The Finn knows that he must win here if he plans on taking the championship down to the wire for the final race of the season in Malaysia, something he has vowed to do. He loves the circuit, as most of the drivers do, and he is determined to take victory for the third year in a row.
